On Friday 19/04/2024 we set off on a fundraising attempt of 10 summits of Pen Y Fan in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), in 24 hours with the hopes of raising £10,000 to help 10 families who are living with motor neurone disease. This was not a challenge for the faint hearted, with around 40 miles of walking and circa 14,000 feet of collected elevation (as well as the descents!).
The team started on Friday evening and ground out 9 brutal ascents, walking through the night, stopping only briefly to refuel. In the afternoon of the Saturday, members of the MND community, the community of Abertillery and surrounding areas, who have supported Mark and Steph since Mark's diagnosis, turned out to join in on the last ascent of The Fan.
The last summit was a special moment for all of those involved and will live long in the memory. The team were joined by Mark and Mark's friend, Ed Slater who also has MND. The boys were strapped into specialised wheelchairs that were kindly donated by David Needham of Leicester and Jamie Hobbs of Pontyclun. With the collective efforts of all involved, Mark and Ed made it up the mountainside to a clear summit for a spectacular view.
Job done.
